Sometimes it's better not to buy a telescope than to get one that will be hard to use and ultimately turn someone off to the hobby. So what do you get for $200? You get a shaky mount, a shoddy drive that either doesn't track well or will break down quickly over time, a halfway decent OTA with a cheap barlow lens in the focuser, a couple of low-cost eyepieces, and a recipie for disaster. The EQ-2 by itself from Orion is $169, without a motor drive. Now, you want a telescope, finder, mount, eyepieces and motor drive for under $200? The odds are very good that all of those things are going to be of poor quality. You're so busy trying to make me look silly or stupid that you're not really reading for content. But hey, your mind is made up, right? Nothing will convince you that the 114NT is a good OTA. This adds to the proof that the telescope reviews (and quite probably the telescopes themselves) you cited have *nothing* to do with the 114NT.

965" eyepieces - the 114NT comes with a 2" focuser and a 1.25" adapter. I'm still looking for a scope, mount, motor drive, finder, and ep's delivered under $200!įirst of all, if you check reviews that you posted on those WalMart and KMart telescopes, most people spoke favorably of the optics in the OTA, just negatively about eyepieces (easily replaceable.) Secondly, if you check those reviews again, you'll hear lots of people talking about. That's $80, which leaves you well under budget.

For those who are handy, Meade's outlet has a very nice 4.5" OTA for $50 shipped, and there are instructions on this site for how to build a Dobsonian mount for it for $30. With a larger aperture, Barlow lens, and higher magnification, PowerSeeker 127EQ is way more powerful and reasonably costlier than others on the list.

But if I'd been looking at $200 or more, I'd have been sorely tempted to save up a little more and get the 8". Celestron - PowerSeeker 127EQ Telescope - Manual German Equatorial Telescope for Beginners - Compact. I bought my StarQuest 4.5 for $163 shipped on sale from Edmunds, and I don't regret it. It stuns me that they can make a penny on these telescopes. Frankly, these are the best deals going for a beginner telescope. For not much more, you can get an 8" Zhumell from ($330 shipped.) DBA is having a free shipping sale, and their 8" is $323.

Sean's Astronomy Shop has 6" Dobsonians, but they're $250 + about $40 shipping. The problems are you're stuck with the quality of that barlow (which can't be great) and you're also going to have a lot of trouble collimating it compared to a longer tubed telescope. It's obviously a short tube, yet boasts a "1000mm focal length" which means it has a 2x barlow built into the focuser. Oh, wow! I wouldn't recommend that Zhumell to anybody.
